Analysis of the geographical distribution of dermatologists in the different cities and regions of Colombia

Introduction:
There is an unequal distribution of dermatologists in Colombia, with a high concentration in the main cities and a shortage in rural areas. Furthermore, the demand for dermatologists in the country is influenced by the health system, where many patients are cared for by general practitioners in primary care. This study aims to obtain information on the number, distribution and characterization of dermatologists in Colombia, as well as the number of graduates in this specialty each year and the approval of foreign degrees.
Materials and methods:
A retrospective descriptive study was carried out with information from the Colombian Association of Dermatology and Dermatological Surgery (AsoColDerma), the Ministry of Health, the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) and the Ministry of National Education. The geographical location of dermatologists, the number of graduates per year from 2001 to 2022 and the recognition of foreign degrees from 2015 to 2022 were analyzed. Likewise, the rate of dermatologists per 100,000 habitants was calculated.
Results:
From 2001 to 2022, 622 dermatologists graduated in Colombia, 25.04% being men. From 2015 to 2022, 329 dermatology degrees were approved, mainly from Cuba, Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. The number of approved titles has increased considerably and in 2020 it exceeded the number of titles issued in the country. The distribution of dermatologists is uneven, with a greater concentration in major cities.
Discussion:
The study highlights the uneven distribution of dermatologists in Colombia, with rural areas facing a shortage while several major cities have a greater supply. Added to this, the rate of dermatologists in the country remains below the recommended level, despite the approval of several degrees from abroad. On the other hand, teledermatology is presented as a promising solution for remote areas to improve access to specialized care in the country.
