Discoid lupus in children and adults: ¿What is the difference?
Keywords:
Discoid lupus erythematosus, systemic lupus erythematosus.Abstract
Discoid lupus in children is a rare disease; it differs from lupus in the adult population in the increased risk of progression to systemic erythematosus lupus according to reports and case series published in the worldwide literature. The main differential diagnosis is neonatal lupus that occurs earlier in life; it is not associated with residual scar lesions and is frequently associated with cardiac involvement which resultsin high risk of mortality. The case of a 3 years old female patient with discoid lupus in the face, without signs or symptoms of systemic erythematosus lupus, with adequate response to treatment with topical calcineurin inhibitors and steroids is presented. Studies are needed with larger numbers of patients and comparison groups to evaluate the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of this disease in children.
