Abstract

Mongolian spot, also known as congenital dermal melanocytosis or Baltz spot, is the most common pigmented lesion in newborns. It usually presents as a blue-gray, blue-green, or brown macule with diffuse edges that does not pale on acupressure. This occurs from birth or the first weeks of life and its disappearance is gradual. Its prevalence is related to ethnic differences and its most predominant location is the lumbosacral and gluteal region. The manifestation of this spot in atypical areas is known as aberrant Mongolian spot and its importance lies in the association with lysosomal storage diseases and pigmentovascular phacomatosis.
