The case is presented of an anesthesiologist who discovered that some of his surgical colleagues were failing to comply with certain aseptic and antiseptic procedures required for surgical safety or were repeatedly making errors in their patients' surgeries. A study of adverse events at the institution found that this situation was associated with various surgical complications and adverse outcomes, including patient deaths. When the anesthesiologist was asked about his awareness of these situations, he acknowledged to be aware of them but stated that he did not intervene out of respect for his colleagues. The case is analyzed based on the health team concept and the scope of medical peerage.
