Introduction: Phototherapy is based on the use of ultraviolet radiation for its effect anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory.
Goals: To describe the age, sex, phototype, and diagnosis of pediatric patients admitted for phototherapy and to evaluate their relationship with dose, treatment time, and adverse events.
Methods: Retrospective, analytical, observational study based on the review of the clinical history of patients aged 1 to 18 years treated with phototherapy between January 2017 and December 2018.
Results: Of 78 patients treated, 35 (45%) had Male sex, and the mean age was 12-3.3 years. The primary diagnoses were psoriasis 35 (45%), vitiligo 26 (33%), and atopic dermatitis 17 (22%). The median and interquartile range of the number of sessions was 29 (IQR 18-40), cumulative dose 7.5 (Joules / cm2) J / cm2 (IQR 4.3-16.4), maximum dose per session 0.5 J / cm2 (IQR 0.3-0.84) and treatment time 3 months (IQR 1.5-5). The accumulated and maximum dose was higher in patients with vitiligo with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (p <0.0001), as well as the treatment time and number of sessions (p <0.0001). Phototype III was the most frequent, 68 (87%). Erythema occurred in 19% of patients.
Conclusions: The female sex and phototype III were the most frequent. Vitiligo patients received more sessions, doses, and treatment time. Erythema was a unique adverse event.
