Introduction: Bowen’s disease (BD) is an in situ squamous cell carcinoma of the epidermis. In Colombia, limited epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic data exists for this condition. This study aims to characterize BD at a fourth-level university hospital in Bogotá, Colombia.
Materials and methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted, with secondary analysis of medical record data from 2013 to 2019. Sociodemographic, clinical, histological, and therapeutic data were collected and analyzed. No statistical association tests were performed.
Results: 149 medical records of patients with BD were analyzed (52% females, 48% males), with a median age of 76 years. The median duration of lesions before consultation was 7 months (IQR 2 - 24), with the most frequent location being the head and face (34%). Adnexal involvement was recorded in 5 biopsy reports (3%). Conventional surgery was the most common treatment (72%), followed by topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) (17%) and Mohs micrographic surgery (10%). At 2 years, 64% of patients treated with conventional surgery and topical 5-FU showed no recurrence. No tumor-associated mortality was recorded.
Conclusions: emphasize and promote non-surgical therapeutic alternatives to minimize unnecessary invasive treatments. Plus, there is a pressing need for additional studies with higher-quality data to enhance our understanding of BD in Colombia.
