Introduction: Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is a genodermatosis associated with an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) due to the abnormal susceptibility to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.1
Materials and methods: A search was performed in Medline, Lilacs, and in the personal library of Dr. Gerzaín Rodriguez. We found documents and photographs, most of them from the 1970s, of the research carried out by doctors Luis Alfredo Rueda and Gerzain Rodriguez in a family from Viracachá, Boyacá. Results: In the 1970s, research carried out in Colombia helped to elucidate aspects that improved the understanding of EV, elements that served to clarify the relationship between skin and mucosal cancer and HPV 2.2,3
Discussion: The advances of the last two decades of the 20th century allowed us to elucidate the carcinogenic potential inherent to HPV in the cervix, long before it was suspected of being an infectious agent. Its carcinogenic capacity was demonstrated in epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV), and these findings contributed to the understanding of other oncogenic associations.4,5,6
Conclusions: Papillomaviruses have several genotypes that can cause cancer in different parts of the body. Its carcinogenic capacity was first demonstrated in epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV), and these findings were extended to cervical cancer, leading to the development of preventive vaccines. Colombian contributions to EV research have been key to this scientific advance. This article is a recognition of those efforts.
